How to Store Medicines the Right Way

Medicines work best when they’re stored correctly. Yet many people keep them in places that can actually reduce their effectiveness — like bathrooms, cars, or sunny windowsills. Proper storage helps maintain both the quality and safety of your medicines. Here are a few simple but important tips to keep in mind.

1. Keep medicines in a cool, dry place

Most medicines should be stored at room temperature — ideally between 15°C and 25°C — and away from moisture and heat. Bathrooms and kitchens may seem convenient, but steam and temperature changes can damage the ingredients over time. A bedroom drawer or cabinet away from sunlight is usually the best spot.

2. Protect medicines from direct sunlight

Sunlight can break down active ingredients and reduce the strength of medicines. Always keep them in their original packaging, which is designed to block out light and protect the contents.

3. Don’t store medicines in the refrigerator unless instructed

Some medicines — such as insulin or certain antibiotic liquids — must be kept cool. But for most medicines, the fridge can be too cold and humid. Always check the label or leaflet to see the recommended storage conditions.

4. Keep medicines out of reach of children and pets

Even common medicines can be harmful if taken accidentally. Store all medicines in a secure place, ideally in a locked cabinet or on a high shelf that children can’t reach.

5. Check expiry dates regularly

Go through your medicine cabinet every few months. Dispose of anything that has expired, changed color, or looks damaged. Take expired medicines to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.

By storing medicines correctly, you protect their quality, prevent unnecessary waste, and make sure they’re ready to do their job when you need them most. A little care goes a long way in keeping your household safe and healthy.
